Alexis Powers grew up in New York City where she developed a love of literature. After
extensive travel, she settled in Los Angeles, married and had two daughters.
Working as a legal secretary, she advanced to probate paralegal. During these years she
began drinking alcoholically. Although she continued working, drinking became a problem.
Alone after her children finished school, she got sober, became an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous and worked on getting her life together. Through all of these challenges, Alexis maintained a sharp sense of humor, able to laugh at her situation. Alexis replaced her addiction to alcohol to an addiction for golf, playing every chance she could.
Sober two years, she met her husband, Tom Powers. Inspired by a class in Writing for Publication taken at Pasadena City College, she embarked on writing novels, continuing to work during the day at the law firm.
When the partners at the law firm began arguing, Alexis saw the handwriting on the wall. Real estate was booming and she joined Sotheby’s. Not only did she successfully sell real estate, she sat on several Boards of non-profits establishing herself as a competent fund-raiser.
Weary of Los Angeles, when she and Tom divorced Alexis moved to Albuquerque. The
altitude proved too arduous for her asthma condition so she relocated to Tucson, Arizona.
Arizona welcomed her with open arms. The Friends of the Oro Valley Library asked her to
sit on their Board. Plus writing several books, she began to facilitate a twice-monthly Writer's Workshop at the Oro Valley Library. Several of her students have achieved their goal of publication. Alexis believes this is her finest achievement.
In addition to writing and doing the workshop, Alexis writes a weekly column for the Arizona Daily Star. Inspiration for her column comes from her life experience and her observations of the human condition. “This is a total hoot,” she remarks when asked about the column.
